First, GE and Square D are two different companies. Square D has 2 lines, the QO uses smaller breakers than the 1" other manufacturers use, and the Homeline which is 1". The QO is the more common and higher end line.
In any box, you CANNOT just stick a tandem breaker in it as others have suggested. There should be a label in the panel that says how many circuits it has. A panel that is 20 slot 40 circuit can have all tandems in it, but a 20 slot 20 circuit cannot have any. It is not safe to use any breaker that isn't made to work with that panel. Just because a breaker physically fits, does not make it right. There are also 2 types of tandem breakers (class CTL and non-class CTL) and you should use the right one for your panel. All new equipment is class CTL, and the non-CTL tandems should only be used in older non-CTL panels. If you can't tell what you have, you shouldn't be doing it yourself.
You should get an electrician to do this work.

You can, however, look at your panel, and decide if you can use another breaker or possibly move some circuits around to make room for a new breaker of the correct size.

If it is a GE (square D) box and it has the 1" breakers in it you should be able to switch to the mini breakers to free up some space.

You need to install a larger breaker box or a sub-panel. However, I recommend hiring an electrician for this. Building codes in most states do not allow the homeowners to replace their panel. You need to check with your local building codes department.
