I was wondering what the reason was for Jen's passing.

According to Soap Opera Digest, the actress, Jennifer Ferrin, asked to go to do other projects, as happens so often. I guess they figured the part had been recast enough and was sort of writen into a corner so they killed her off in true soap fashion to make story possibilities as a result of her death.
As for the actor who played Hal..I often wondered due to his frequent "personal leave of absences" (yes, one was due to his mother being ill, but he's been gone a lot since then) if he was either battling depression or a chemical addiction. Very sad. I hope they do him justice and dont recast, but give him a proper Oakdale funeral so the cast and fans can say farewell properly.

Actor Benjamin Hendrickson committed suicide. It was a self inflicted gunshot to the head. Hendrickson played Chief of Detectives Hal Munson for over 20 years. He won a daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 2003. He was 55.

That's really sad news. I remember Hendrickson played the errant salesman father in the wacky comedy "Spanking the Monkey".

Hendrickson's last air date in the role of Detective Munson will be July 12th.

Jen died due to pneumonia that went to her heart and caused her vital organs to start failing and then they shut down. The doctors never released her from the hospital and Lucy couldn't convince her to stay. Jen was adamant about getting home in time for Johnny's homecoming from the hospital, she wanted to be there for him. She ignored the doctors and released herself from Memorial. It was sad because Dusty and Jen had so much chemistry you could feel it.
