i think its absolute crap. i dont need to learn about the same black people every feb. wow rosa parks was told to go to the back. i dont care. she should have got up and given her seat up. (isnt it ironic that all the black kids want to ride in the back of the bus today) and i dont need to learn about some guy inventing peanut butter. so what if MLK had a dream. i dream every night.

You asked a nice, honest question, so I'll give you an honest answer.
There's no harm in it and a lot of it is interesting to hear about. But there's a fine line we've been hovering around in this country. We're repeatedly told that everyone is equal, which most of us do believe, but we keep getting all these special Black things. If we're all equal, then why are there so many "Black only" things? It doesn't so much make us mad as it confuses us or makes us believe that there must be some inequality somewhere. Affirmative Action, for example, implies to us that Blacks are not equal and need special help. It's not based on financial need, it's based on color. It all seems so contradictory, especially in the 21st century.
I think it would be more helpful if all people made more of an effort to just be people and stopped pointing out all the differences so much. I don't think of Black people as Black people. They're people. And isn't that what everybody wanted forty years ago? But now everyone keeps reminding me that they're not people, they're Black people, or African-Americans. It seems counter-productive. But, then again, I'm by no means an expert.

Same way I feel about white history month. Oh yeah there is no white history month. I think it just helps to keep races separated if a black person has done something worth being in history books then why segregate it to Feb. I learned about blacks in history when I was in school and it wasn't just during Black History month. Do we need to keep blaming people living today for things done in the past? Lots of people of all different races have done lots of things in history where is Asian history month or Hispanic or Irash or arab when will it stop?

I'm of indian heritage, so ignore my answer if you'd like. I agree with the teacher above who likes to space it in year round with the other history. I don't think a special month needs to be set aside for it. Black people today know full well where they came from and they have achieved great things in America. By having a special month for black history, it creates a distinct line between black people and everyone else. We also have to kill the double standards in this country. While admittedly funny, I think comedians like Chris Rock, who base entire performances on making fun of white people and other people, should tone it down, because if Jeff Foxworthy did it to black people his career would be finished. If white rockers were to talk about black people the way black rappers talk about white people, their careers, too, would be over. Black History month is yet another double standard in my opinion. Rosa Parks and MLK Jr. are not black history... they are American History. Just because our country's past was not always pretty doesn't mean we should rename certain portions of it to make it seem positive. It was not a positive time during the fight for equal rights, but good things came of it.

I'm not bothered by it, I do think it's good for individuals to have pride in their race. However I also think it's interesting how white's for the most part tip-toe when answering any question involving race. When I first read the question I cringed, but I felt the question was a sincere one and deserves an honest answer. I agree with teaching black history, but do it in a way that teaches pride without prejudice.

because, straightforward is straightforward. And what do you propose each month is ours? as an party, If there became an all white human beings college, we may be said as racists. It has happened. now to not teach their is an all black college, yet no longer an all white college. is this extremely straightforward? usa of america, an section with this kind of huge volume of kinds of folk. human beings of each race and faith has made an impact on society and this usa. Why no longer make each month a month for a diverse team. WHY only for black human beings?? sure, there have been many sought after black human beings, yet there has also been many sought after white human beings. purely because they're white they shouldnt get a month? i need to assert, black human beings do have it a lot a lot less difficult then whites. each little aspect we are saying, we assumed a racists. If a black and white individual went for a job, with a similar grades and journey, the black individual will be employed purely so that they dont 'offend' all people. usa of america is corrupt. They beleive we ought to pay each black individual back for being slaves. were YOU a slave? Your great grandparents would were. properly, my great grandparents were Italian and were dealt with very very undesirable....what about an afternoon for them! an outstanding grandmother had a her baby even as operating, had the lifeless toddler and continued to paintings.....having the lifeless toddler in her bag. each team of folk has had it demanding. The Irish, Italian, chinese, Spanish, Black. it could be equivalent or no longer something. no longer purely a black histroy month...yet a white heritage month, no longer purely womans month....yet a mans month to. no longer purely spanish written everywhere...yet in a great number of lanaguages! i'm no longer racists, it really is purely what I beleive.

As a caucasian I find it sad that black history gets relegated to just one month, while Asian-American and Latin-American history are not celebrated at all.
We're all Americans. It's time to lose the race card.

As a Caucasian teacher I almost never celebrate the month - rather I try to teach African American content throughout the year. It is a part of our nation's history, that did not just occur in one month.

I have no problems with it.
I know Danny Glover feels it is a pile of malarkey (and I personally wonder how we convinced the Black people to accept the shortest month of the year for this celebration), but if we can successful focus on the accomplishements of Blacks in America, perhaps it will go a long way in combatting racism.

bringing to attention all the contributions that have occurred in the past that weren't mentioned in our history books is a good thing. I believe that we as Americans should be proud of our past and learn from mistakes made by our ancestors. they did it , we didn't , holding grudges for what others did is definitly not the answer. As far as a once a year thing. we should celebrate our differences every day and embrace them. That what makes Americans, Americans.
