well i read it with the school and i had some reading questions that i had to answer along the way, so honestly if i just picked it up and it wasn't required, i wouldn't have wanted to read it because the begining was so borring. but keep reading cause it gets better. last advice, is to be mature about it, sometimes in class, some of the people didn't get it because they were thinking too elementary

Please give the book a chance, or any book, for that matter. 5 pages isnt really enough time for such a quick judgment, I think. It's not like the visual media (TV, movies) where they can't afford to be slow about drawing you in due to our mad remote clicking culture. Most reading, especially when you read more intellectual stuff, will always require that kind of patience, I think.

By the way, NO book appeals to everyone, so don't get your opinions on a book from a total stranger--What do they know about what you like?

Within TWO pages I was sucked in forever. I read it over and over again. I've been reading at least once a year since 1982. It is as good a book as has ever been written. So how do I read it? Constantly.

It's about a young girl. She's lost her mother. Her dad's a lawyer in a southern town. He ends up defending a black man accused of raping a white woman.

It turns out the white woman made up the story. It happens at a time when black people had no rights at all. The young girl loves her daddy. She makes friends with Boo Radley, a retarded man next door. But Boo turns out to be not so dumb as people made out.

The movie is great. See the movie first if you want. But don't avoid reading the book. It is a classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to break it to you, but the book isnt going to get any better. The teacher i read it with analyzed every little sentence to death. I guess you understand all the levels better, but isnt worth it if there's no good or interesting story line to keep you going. You're better off watching the movie.

I like it. And it is rather slow at the beginning. Have you seen the movie? Try that before you have another go at the book. Maybe having an idea of what's happening will help you get engaged.

I thought it started out slowly but it was worth the read. It's a great novel...a murder mystery if you will.
Incidentally Harper Lee has recently published a letter in Oprah's magazine "O". I first heard this on Howard Stern but it's verified (see below).

Do you like to read at all?? All I can tell you is keep reading...it may be a little slow at first, but eventually you may get to the point where you can't put it down.

The first part is a little boring at first, and hard to understand. But once you continue to the second chapter, things will be more interesting. You really should try reading it. My teacher told us to skip the first chapter of we don't understand it and them come back to it later. :)

A great book. Although Harper Lee is still with us as I post this, she decided to be a "one hit wonder" and never wrote another book after this one. Too bad. :(
