Simply put, the Stratocaster is the standard for rock, the Telecaster is the standard for country.
Heres a partial list of Stratocaster users:
Jeff Beck /Richie Blackmore/Eric Clapton/Kurt Cobain/Billy Corgan/Robert Cray/Dick Dale/The Edge/David Gilmour/Rory Gallagher/Buddy Guy/Jimi Hendrix/Buddy Holly/ Eric
Johnson/Mark Knopfler/Yngwie Malmsteen/John Mayer/Bonnie Raitt/Richie Sambora/Marty Stuart/Robin Trower/Stevie Ray Vaughn/ Jimmie Vaughan
ALSO Tommy Bolin, Bob Dylan, John Frusciante, Janick Gers, Mick Green, Albert Hammond Jr., George Harrison, Mary Kaye, Terry Kath, Ed King, Mike McCready, Dave Murray, Mike Oldfield, Uli Jon Roth, Steve Rothery, Mike Rutherford, Adrian Smith, Richard Thompson, Joe Walsh, Dean Ween, Yan, and Frank Zappa.
Virtually every country player plays a Telecaster. Albert Lee is as good as they get and he plays one. The blues legend Roy Buchanan played one. I think Steve Cropper of Booker T & The MGs and The Blues Brothers played a Telecaster.

They are different animals, and can't be compared as better or worse. I prefer the Telecaster, but both can be really used for any kind of player, if they've got the touch. The Strat has the sexy body contours, but the Tele just has a vibe that nothing else does. So many models of each are made now, that a better question might be: which model to choose?

The Stratocaster is more of a guitar for a rock sound, while the telecaster is for more of a country sound.
