Are you talking about a Windows domain or an Internet domain?

A domain is a large network of more than ten computers. With ten or less computers you use a "workgroup" network. With more than ten computers you need a domain and a DNS domain name translation to translate each computers address in the domain into IP addresses for connections outside the intranet. A company uses domains for their larger networks than a smaller company may need with less than ten in a workgroup. Now, you can connect a few workgroups together with bridges, but it is much simpler to use a domain, and it is also more secure. So, if you have more than ten computers it is usually best to use a domain. A domain can also have a website and the website usually uses the domain name as its URL address. So, if your company is Metal effects, your domain name and web address could be http://www.metaleffects.com and the e-mail addresses of the company would end in @metaleffects.net or .com or .org etc. It is easier and simpler to keep the company name its web URL and its e-mail addresses all the same. This way if somebody knows the company name it is easy to figure out the what the website is most likely called, and if you know the name of an employee it is easy to figure out his or her e-mail address if you forgot it as usually companys use either the first initial and last name before the @ or the first name and last initial before the @ and then the domain or company name like patriciaf@metaleffects.net or Pfastest@metaleffect.net etc.

Hope this helps some, have a nice day.

You don't need one. A domain is a name you register with a company using a top level domain extension. For example, microsoft.com = Microsoft registered with the .com extension. If you want to run your own website or email servers you will need a domain. Other than that you should be fine connecting through an ISP like most of the world.

Domain in the network is like your name in real world, everyone knows you with your name in the real world and with domain in the network.
You need a domain if you want to make money or be famous on the net or for long-term purposes.

domain names are translated by domain name servers (DNS) to real IP adresses so that we humans can remember it. visitt them, access their information/services. Making the owners of 'catchy' (well publicized) ones very $appy.
I bet you use names on your phone's adress book :)
