I live in a country-ish setting. We live on a hill above our town, and I like living here. I don't like the big trucks that travel our roads, but ya gotta give something to get something.

Country!
In order> 13 yrs. in the city .>13 yrs in the burbs > 17 yrs. in the country (minus military service).
First two were the parents choice, the last was mine. I like being able to take care of my own affairs my own way, with my own hands, ( and not bother those too close to me as well). Out here everyone is more or less capable to handle things, no slackers; they keep to themselves for the most part, and come out of the woodwork to help if you're down & out. What a reversal of the city experience.
It is not always easy, but it is satisfying in a way that people who rely on the local gov't for everything from water / sewer / and trash pickup, etc. can never fully appreciate.
The collective sense of community in the city and burbs is a very thin veneer indeed. Relying on institutions that no one in their right mind would trust is foolish and leaves one vulnerable by way of their own inability to manage their own lives. (see Katrina).

I live out on a farm, its great but then again I'm a farmer so maybe I don't know better.

The problem of living too far out in the country is winter time when a big snow storm hits the electricy is lost and roads snowed shut for 5 days.

Country roads, horses, creeks to go swimming in, tire swings, pitch dark nights with skies full of stars... solitude, silence. Definately the country.
