The sound card could be a factor, you however didn't give enough information. Not all Applications will output in surround sound.

Programs like powerdvd and windvd which come bundled with some forms of hardware only support 2 channel sound. For games you might need to change audio settings.

If you do get (or Have) a multi channel version of such an application it may be neccasary to change the settings(in the application and in windows).

In windows goto CONTROL PANEL (this is for classic view) and then open the SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES applet. At SPEAKER SETTINGS click ADVANCED and then at speaker setup slect 5.1 SURROUND SOUND SPEAKERS and OK.

As for the sound card if you only have 3 mini-jack holes then you might be able to set it so that the mic and line in become your rear , centre and sub outputs but you don't specify what card. If there are six holes it ussualy work like this.

GREEN - 2 Front Speakers
BLACK - 2 Rear Speakers
ORANGE - The Sub and Centre

Alternativly You can also try this 5.1 AC3 test file. it will work for any program that plays AC3, and that app should be set for multichannel.
