I think it is sad that we would have to pass a law to protect the flag from it's own people. We don't stop people from leaving this country. If they are truly disillusioned by our way of life, why do they stay? I can understand when our enemy wants to burn our flag but why would American want to be aligned with them?

No, I do not think that the founding fathers meant for the burning of the flag to be considered free speech. My understanding is that free speech was meant for speech or the written word only. Not physical acts or expression of art or anything other than words in the form of communication. I am not sure I would say treason. But, I would say heft fines and/or jail time.

Act of treason. Yeah, they have the right to, but what point are they trying to make by burning the flag that people have fought and lived under? The flag is a symbol of our country. It brings a sense of peace and security and unity. So why burn the flag? Yeah, its allowed, but its extremely disrespectful and it should be banned. The flag when looked upon is like a sign of American pride, of unity, of peace, of everything that our ancestors and current citizens have fought for. The flag has been burned tattered, abused, and so on during its time from our country's beginning and will continue to until our end. Why would you burn something that symbolizes a greatness and suffering that your country has faced? What's the point of burning a symbol that has been respected and looked upon with envy since our nation's founding? The Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, World War I and II, and so on, the flag has always been there. Valley Forge, Fort McHenry, 9/11, it has always been there through our times of trouble. So why burn something that has its roots planted since the beginning of out nation, desecrate something that represents the best of this (even if it is or isn't seen the same through the eyes of others)?

Free speech. I don't see how burning a flag could endanger the people. It isn't like waging war or selling government secrets. In fact, isn't burning the preferred way to dispose of an old and ragged flag? If that is preferred in one respect, how could it be treason in another?

I'm not saying that it is something that I would do, but I wouldn't get all torqued about someone who did.

Burning any flag is wrong and very low, I dont care which country it is. It is like shitting on the values that a country is built on. It is especially stupid for one to burn their own country's flag for protests. That goes against all protesters in our country want: a better country. By burning a flag you are basically saying, "Screw our sovereign nation; we dont want it anymore" instead of "Lets all come together and make our country better through alternate solutions" Burning a flag is never a valid form of free speech. It is closest to treason. When you burn a flag you give up on all that your fore-fathers and fellow countrymen fight for: the very freedom that you are abusing in the act. It is contradictory in a way.

Free speech. I personally haven't burned any flags, but to be tried for treason for burning a piece of cloth is silly. There's no point in burning the flag in the first place sure, but if you get into a big fight with your husband and burn his favorite shirt-should you go to jail? No.

It's an expression of free speech, one of the rights that people fought and died for.

Treason is the betrayal of one's country by waging war against it or by consciously and purposely acting to aid its enemies. How does burning a flag aid our enemies?

If, as Bush says, "they hate our freedom", should we *not* exercise our freedoms so they won't hate us? Or should we show to the world what a great damn country we are?

By the way, there's been exactly FOUR flag burnings in this country in the past few years. Hardly an epidemic.

Treason...and the ultimate disrespect and a slap in the face to all that have fought and died under our great flag.

Burning the flag is not freedom of speech...
God gave us a tongue to speak up and disagree with those that we disagree with...ie: government etc.
Demonstrations, speeches, writing letters, and making phone calls are options to express your feeling and beliefs regarding any and all situations.

Burning the flag is a disgrace and only produces anger... No one listens to a person that burns our flag! It does not make any statement other than you have disgraced and dishonored our National symbol.

I would personally consider it an act of free speech. It's a way to show that you don't like what's going on, and I don't believe something as trivial as burning a sheet of fabric should be considered treason.

Free speech. Men and women did not fight and die for the flag. They fought, ironically, for the right of expression that just might involve burning the flag for some people. I would burn a flag on my front lawn every day if I could afford to, or fly it upside down underneath a Gadsen flag. Comparisons to other fascist/socialist states nothwithstanding, the U.S. government is tyrannical.

A act of treason. Our flag is to be respected. I don't burn the Iraq, North Korean or Iran flag, so why can other people burn our flag.
