(It's a compaq). It's not the battery because I use it plugged in. When I start up my laptop, it works fine- for like around 30 minutes. Then all of a sudden, it just "shuts off" or crashes! No warning signs or error messages. The wierd thing is that you can just turn it back on and it'll work just fine again- until the next 30 minutes or so. Some things seem to make it crash sooner like playing games. Once it shuts off, the sooner I restart it- the less time I have before it crashes again.
It seems to run the longest whenever it has been off for a while, like first thing in the morning; or if I'm not playing any games. Things like Limewire and games seem to give me the least time before the computer goes out COMPLETELY.
I tried removing programs that have viruses, ect...But nothing seems to work.
I know little about computers, so I would apprectate it if you'd use layman's terms that are easily understood...(not stuff like "system configuration" or "defragmentation...)

You might be overheating. Does the bottom get hot? Try placing it on an ice bag, just to see if that keeps it going longer. If you are overheating, you probably need to replace a defective fan.

It sounds like it is overheating. There are a few things you can try:
(1) Use a can of dust remover spray and dislodge any dust that might have built-up in your exhaust fan. Spray into the vents where the fan expels the hot air.
(2) If your battery is good, it should last you longer than 30 minutes. Try doing these same activities that typically shut down the computer in about 30 minutes *without* using the power plug. Sometimes, plugs can go bad. Manufacturers like AlienWare have actually shipped notebooks with brand-new plugs that overheat the computer.

it sounds like you either have a virus or a hardware problem. Based on your description i assume it isnt a virus. Have you done any recent hardware upgrades (ie. adding RAM or a new hard drive)? if so try taking the new parts out and c if they r causing the problem. Your power supply may also be at fault. If the computer is over 5 years old it may be time to get a new one.
If none of the above apply, you ram may be bad or overheating. Try running the memtest at the link below. Run it for atleast an hour (a day if possible). If you get even one error you should replace the RAM.

Sounds very much like your computer is overheating. Laptops are prone to overheating, especially when you are running CPU intensive software like a video game. Not sure how you can monitor the temp on your machine. It will depend on the hardware inside it. May already come with some sort of system monitor.
Also - make sure your fan(s) are working. As a test, you can blow a fan AT your PC while you're using it and see if it stays on longer. That would help confirm this theory.

This sounds like a hardware problem and is most likely due to something in the laptop overheating. More intensive applications (like games) cause a computer to utilize more of its power and thus make it run hotter than if say you were just chatting or downloading music. So you should definitely get it checked out to see if its overheating by someone who might know how to do so.

i have about 3 things that may be causing this.
1.)It's probably a virus that uploads slowly and cause your system to shutdown after running.
2.)it's probably that somebody has play in your BIOS call a tech. who knows the AWARD BIOS to check your system and configure it the right way, make sure no body go play they again.
3.)it's probably your adaptor, you know it has to turn AC-DC voltages for your laptop to use.so it might be that it's no longer perfect that is, it allows some ripple to pass and that is what is shutting it down frequently. And you know some computer powers are very sensitive to ripples. Ripples are non smoothed voltages, the smoothed capacitor death.I am pretty sure this is the problem, try swapping that adaptor and see.

i know you wont be able to understand but the problem is probably being caused by a virus that has been installed in the registry and everytime you restart your computer even if you "get rid of the virus" using a virus scan program it'll probably come back again...however if you run the scan it'll probably tell you where it's located...after you locate the virus call a help desk (local) and see if they can help you find it in the registry...if you can't send me an email amadeushughey@yahoo.com

i think you have it on a timer.that or you're doing too much stuff on it at once.or by the way you say the longer its been out the longer it works that probably means you cant charge it and play it at the same time because basically its neutral.cuz all the power u take u use up at the same time so you never get any.

Your computer is in Heat...I mean literally. This means that the temperature of your computer turns very hot. The reason it shuts itself down is to prevent damage to your system or even to you.
Contact your PC manufacturer to avoid electrical risk.
