it derived from early day cranks (hand turn) but it is still popular today because the main component in the process is the "crankshaft" this little part is the "heart" of your engine. once it starts turning (forced by the starter) you are "cranking"

In the early cars one had to get in front of his car and turn a crank to start the car,that's how the name came about.
