Im absolutely amazed at the juvenile remarks that surfaced so quickly to this question.
This is a Great question.
We are truly blessed. My family has noted this several times this year. We may struggle but we feel ours is minor compared to the good things we receive.
I think this whole country is blessed and we deverve it. I am not one of those who like to place blame on Americans or humans in general. The whole is good and deserving.
The few are bad and sell lots of media time.

I think there is a flaw in the idea of blessings as the word implies divine favor of certain people over others.
When hurricane Katrina hit the northern Gulf Coast in '05, I saw on the news broadcasts scores of people in other Gulf regions saying they were "truly blessed" that the hurricane didn't hit where they lived. What, these folks get special favors, and the people of lower Louisiana, Mississippi, and the Florida panhandle are somehow justified in getting plowed by a freak storm? That doesn't make any sense.
Maybe its just that the word "blessed" is too often used in place of the word "fortunate." Or, more cynically, it might mean that too many people think they deserve more than others.

Totally agree. All I hear are complaints. I want that! Why can't I have it! I'm hungry! (coming frome a rich, overweight kid in a restraunt after eating!) But some people just forget how fortuanate they really are. I see the blessings.
1. I have a home
2. I have a family (no divorces)
3. I have food when I want it
4. I have clothes, nice ones
5. I am able to go to sleep away camp
6. I have friends (or so called ones!)
It's not even always the material things. I could go on forever.

I know I'm blessed I have a wonderful man who loves me 7 great kids and a family that is there for me through the good times and the bad. I think that a lot of people do get caught up in the bad and forget that there are good things in the world, all you have to do to find them is to open your eyes and see

We are caught up in all the bad things of this world.
I have moments of sheer simplicity that make me feel blessed: Waking in the morning, hearing the birds outside chirping, feeling the cool morning breeze filter in through the open bedroom window.. Throughout the day (and evening) I have to hold to what few moments I have, to find peace. Too much has happened this past year, and the effects are still hurting my family. But if I look quietly, and calmly, I see our blessings, and am thankful.

I know the blessings of food in the fridge and pantry, a job to work at, a roof over my head, loving family, a faith relationship with God, a loving marriage, and may I never take these or any "everyday" blessings (ie a bird singing, the sun shining, a ride to work, a kindness by a stranger, etc) for granted in every day life.

It is part of human nature that most people don't recognize the blessings in their life until they loose them. They become caught up in their day to day problems. For many its a struggle just to survive. In the latter case this leaves little time to "count your blessings".
Though I must say in the travel through my life I have found that those that have the least" count their blessings "the most.

Absolutely. Actaully, that is a gift of mine. I always been able to see the blessing in everything. People are natuarlly self-centered and always want instant gratification. I can't blame them. I think we are all like that to a certain extent. Life has a way of showing us lessons and making us better people, but many ignore it. You have to have patience to be a happy person.

Yes, I've recognized it for the last three yrs. My son is, and I'm sorry to say, more of a blessing than my wife. Although, she is a very close second.
