Is West Indies a country (or) it is the name of group of countries?

The West Indies are the island nations of the Caribbean Sea. They are so called because when they were first discovered by Italians, they thought they had gone all the way around the world and reached India, and as they had sailed west to get there, they became the West Indies.
The island nations of Southeast Asia are sometimes called the East Indies for the same reason. Their European discoverers had sailed east to get there, and thought they were in India.

it DOES NOT refer to the Indus Valley in any way shape or form.
the West Indies refers to a GROUP OF COUNTRIES also known as the carribean for the sea they are found in. they were called so because ol' chris colombus believed he had landed in india when really he was quite mistaken. since he had sailed westward to get there he named the region, the west indies -- and the name has stuck.

i tottally disagree with the answer of the first person.the country near the indus river is India and not West Indies.they are different.west indies refers to a group of islands in the carribean.it is considered as a single country
