Because there is no air in space and so without a spacecraft people would die

I was gonna put something stupid like "because the traffic is horrendous", but everyone beat me to it, so I will answer the question:

Humans go to space the way they do currently because there is no other way to get there. Space elevators that have been theorized would be too pricy to build and would need already-existing orbiting assemblers to be feasible. And bypassing instantaneous transportation, any other means are completely illogical or impossible.

We go to space for the same reason we go into the wilderness or visit the depths of our great oceans. Our planet is not the end of our reach. We can discover so much in outer space, both to further humanity's existence and technology.

Because space craft are, right now, the only way to get into space. without a space craft that can reach space, nobody can go there. The buses don't run there yet. Cars can't drive there. Airplanes can't go that high. Hot Air Balloons cannot make it. Hang Gliders can't catch a thermal updraft that goes there. Cannons can't shoot people there without killing them. So everyone who wants to get into space, presently has only two choices, go in a spacecraft or don't go. Simple. :)

Maybe the true question was meant to be, "Why do we send humans into space rather than just machines." To that question, I would say that if humans are to eventually live somewhere besides Earth, that we need to know how our bodies will react to certain situations in order to survive.

cos earthcraft travels just in earth like planes and stuff so they have to use space craft so that people from earth can survive up there in space.
