My stomach has grown however I started back on Depo in December 05 and I have had two periods since. What can be going on? I have taken two pregnancy tests (negative), but is it possible for it to be a false negative?? Other than the weight gain I have not had any pregnany symptoms.

Hi there,

You should get a pregnancy blood test, which is more accurate
than a urine test, from a gynecologist or at a good infertility center
in your area. That is one thing you need to resolve without guessing.
Also, if you are more than five months along and are in fact pregnant,
you might feel the baby move about or kick if in fact you are
pregnant.

I am not sure about the two periods but definitely you need to
discuss this with your gynecologist, not just with an internist.

Thyroid problems sometimes do pop up in women who previously
have not had such problems. Have you ever been pregnant? How about
problems with your periods thru the years? Have you ever taken
birth control pills? All of this can potentially aggravate thyroid
issues to some extent.

It is possible that you are gaining weight because of the depo.
Many hormones can cause this, and I would say this is true
regardless of what the doc tells you.

What is your age? If you are mid-thirties or older, thyroid or
chaning hormones could be factors for sure.

Be sure to keep an eye on your pap tests, breast exams and
mammograms. If you have lots of irregular periods, or pain
in your groin, ask for an ultrasound of your uterus and ovaries.
Ovarian problems (some serious and some not) can cause
hormonal troubles and weight gain sometimes.

Has your appetite for food and snacks especially escalated?
The depo, as well as your own changing hormones, can both
be factors.

Depo itself can cause infrequent periods, bloating (i.e. weight gain). The likely hood of you receiving a false negative while on the Depo shot is very slim, at the same time realize that infrequent periods can cause weight gain as well as stress, poor eating and drinking habits as well. I do believe the weight gain is associated with the Depo shot.

It means that your body metabolism is getting low as compared before. Your biological clock has changed a bit. Your body has decrease its capability to burn calories as fast as it use to be. The fat which accumulate in areas such as tummy, butt, thigh and etc. So anything you eat especially something fattening stores easily and it burns slowly not like when you younger. Thus, you gain weight.
At this point you must be careful of your diet. Low carbo, low fat/protein, less red meat, more veggies and fruits are the best to stay thin. The older you get the low metabolism you will have. Exercise is the key to stay slim, fit and trim!

It could very well be Depo. Check out the official website. They do clinical trials, and the average woman gains weight while on the shot. Some women gain so much that they have to discontinue use.

"There is a tendency for women to gain weight while on therapy with DEPO-PROVERA CI. From an initial average body weight of 136 lb, women who completed 1 year of therapy with DEPO-PROVERA CI gained an average of 5.4 lb. Women who completed 2 years of therapy gained an average of 8.1 lb. Women who completed 4 years gained an average of 13.8 lb. Women who completed 6 years gained an average of 16.5 lb. Two percent of women withdrew from a large-scale clinical trial because of excessive weight gain."

it could be the Depo, since hormones have the possibility of adverse effects on your metabolism. it might also be a lifestyle change, stress, or just your body maturing. i gained 10 pounds over 2 months when i was 15, simply because my metabolism slowed waaaaay down, and it did distribute itself around my belly.

You must have changed your diet, exercise, lifestyle or environment. Weight creeps on upon maturity, but not at this speed.
Also, I don't want to scare you, but you may want to check your hormones. Imbalance in thyroid or adrenal hormones may cause certain syndromes, and weight gain may be one of the symptoms. Don't worry though if you didn't notice any other changes in your body or mood.

Yes, you should go see you doctor. Not sure what Depo is, but as one respondent stated it could be the cause. Also, not sure how old you are, but if you as we age our metabolism slows, so you'll need to kick up the exercise.

Your metabolism may have just slowed down, but you should see your doctor and ask that your thyroid be checked. It may be hypoactive which will cause weight gain.

this isn't healthful for somewhat one. The needed weight benefit is 30 pounds. yet for someone overweight, in the journey that they are dropping weight by using exercize, yet nevertheless eating adequate for the toddler, i assume it will be available.
