This is the weirdest place I've ever lived. With the exception of Austin and a few other places that are accepting of individual differences, this is for the most part a very unwelcome place for a "yankee," a non-Christian, a kid who doesn't want to play sports, and anyone who prefers to eat anything that's not fried or barbecued by the slab. Not to mention, for anyone with a progressive point of view. This red state has been responsible for so much damage--G.W. Bush, Ken Lay, Oil industry excess, global warming toys (big trucks, boats, and SUVs), maybe we should just cut our losses and let the place have it's nationhood back. They 've been working on it since the Alamo. Yes, my kids DO salute the Texas flag in school. What do to about this place!?

Expand your view. How do you think a conservative or Christian feels about New York or San Franciso? Remember that whole "melting pot" thing? It's our diversity that makes us great. Progressives tend to forget that diversity also includes rednecks, jocks, SUV drivers, and rich people. It takes all of us. Not just self-absorbed pseudo-intellectuals who complain about things that don't exist. Read the actual science about global warming. Man-made global warming doesn't exist.

And oil executives/companies have little to do with the high price of gas. There's almost ten times the amount of tax in the price of a gallon of gas as there is oil company profit. Gas prices are high because there's a lot of tax, because we refuse to drill our own oil, because nobody will allow a refinery to be built in their "neighborhood", and because each state has its own blend of gasoline. Those things are all fine, if that's what we want to do. But then you have to accept higher gas prices as the trade-off. Those things all restrict supply, which forces prices higher.

And oil prices, by the way, are determined by the futures market - based primarily in progressive New York city. Not Texas.

Lighten up. Enjoy life. Enjoy true diversity.

First off, not EVERYONE in Texas is like that. It's mainly the older generation that fits into the category you're talking about and if those are the only people you met in Texas, you didn't get out much.

No, Texas should not leave the union. It would cause more problems than it would solve. We all have guns down here and would open war with Oklahoma and kill them all. The rest of America would get mad and kill everyone in Texas so there is really no point.
