First off, I am an American. But I was wondering why other countries have sucessful dollar coins like the UK and Canada while we have bills and the obscure sacagawea dollar.
Do we just hate coins, or some other reason.

In order to have a successful dollar coin, you need to eliminate the dollar bill. One possible reason is the politicians are wondering what they would tuck in a strippers G-string if they got rid of the dollar bill :-P

A major reason is expense. The old cartwheel, or silver dollar, would cost more to manufacture nowadays than a dollar each. Additionally, we don't particularly want to be burdened with toting around a pocketful of those. Twenty silver dollars is unacceptably bulky and heavy. And of course, y'aint gonna buy much with a mere twenty bucks nowadays!

As far as the two recent attempts - as you observe, they didn't go over real well. Although they were not too expensive to produce, we still don't want to bother carrying a bunch of quarter-size coins around. You put a roll of quarters, loose, in your pocket fora couple days and see how you like it. That's forty quarters, and you'll find it a pain in the - well, in the pocket! The similarity to the 25-cent coin also proved a problem. So the mint wisely gave up on dollar coins. I suspect that after those two fiascos, we won't be seeing any new dollar coins any time soon. Or any more two-dollar bills...

Just never had much use for it. The Betsy Ross was probably the most successful, however, it was too close in size to the quarter, and they discontinued it because of that. We have single dollar bills, so why do we need coins? I just turn all my coins into the bank when they pile up anyway.

Weight it is more comfortable to carry single then a coin. In most other countries stuff is expensive there are few things that run for a dollar but in the US dollar or less stuff is everywhere. So we use the dollar bill more then any other place.

We were all born and raised with a dollar bill. A lot of people just don't like change and just want to accept what they have, espically when there's nothing wrong with what is proposed to change. Dollar bills are also much easier to keep and carry than coins.

Because honestly who wants a pocket jingling full of heavy coins? Bills are so much nicer they fold up neatly in a wallet, where as coins just slide out of your pocket and wind up under the car seat.

P.S While were on the topic lets get rid of the penny as well.

I would use dollar coins but they are hard to get, I can only get them if I ask at my bank and then they have to go look for them.
