A computer is just a piece of electronics. Like other electronics they tend to wear out.

A computer is only designed to last no more than 3 years normally (newer models). Plus computers become out dated just after 2 years normally.

If you have a 10 yr old computer that actually still works, first be amazed. Next sell it or toss it in the trash.

The only part of that old computer that you won't upgrade is the power cord. Even the case won't be able to hold all the items in computers of today.

Your best bet is to buy. Now Dell I wouldn't buy. They are like the Dollar Store of computers. Like anything, you get what you pay for. So a $300 computer will be just that, a cheap computer that won't have anything on it and no power.

Shop around, look at sales. You can find a good computer for $500 with all that you'd need. Even look on ebay for new or used computers.

My current computer I got off ebay, top of the line Sony Media Station Tower. New it was around $2900. 1 year old and used on ebay and it was $850.

If you are computer dumb, find a friend that knows what they are doing and have them assist you. This does not mean a friend that surfs chat rooms and porn. This means a true computer person.

The answer is....it depends. When I evaluate a client for upgrades, I look at what they use the computer for and why they feel they need the upgrade. If they say they want the upgrade because the computer is old then I become skeptical. If they say they want the upgrade because it is slow, then I am more inclined to believe they need one.

Now I would examine what you use the computer for. If you only use it to surf the web a couple times a week and check email then you probably only need a "tune up". Upgrade the ram, format the hard drive (only after saving any important files), reload the operating system and install anti virus/spyware. It will likely run much faster and you will have spent a lot less money.

On the other hand, if you use the computer daily and use resource intensive applications like MS Office, video games, multi media applications, etc or if you would like to use these types of applications then a new computer is likely the better option.

For the tune up, check craigslist.com and you can probably find a freelance computer repairman who can do the work cheaply. They should be A+ certified at a minimum.

Good luck.

A 10 year old computer is like a 90 year old man. It is so many generations behind current computing that it isn't worth much. Of course a 90 year old man can do a lot, and so can a 10 year old computer. But, if you want to do anything on the web, use a modern operating system etc. then get the Dell. A $300 Dell isn't going to have much in it, but it will be able to do the basic tasks, some of which may be beyond the old computer.

If you upgrade the 10 year old computer, you will have a piece of junk but that would be better than the $300 Dell.

In order to upgrade a 10 year old computer you would easily spend over $300 in parts. Buy a dell for $300, better use of your money.\

I am telling you, buy a $300 Dell. Do not even waste time to try to upgrade a 10 years old computer. My parents did that and gave it to me to use. YOu cannot upgrade everything. If you could it will cost a lot, at least more than $300.

Upgrading a 10 year old computer is a WASTE! You can easily spend $300 on a new chip, more memory, etc, that is, if the mother board can even handle the amount and type you want.

Go with the Dell, it will probably come with XP already installed and have no extra baggage problems when you decide to upgrade that.

An up grade would caust so much more. Be sure to check on what all you will get with this 300.00 Dell and that you are not just buying a "Piece" instead of the whole machine. Just sounds VERY cheep price for new computer.
I'd say go new.
