Start -> Run -> msconfig -> startup
turn off most everything, make sure you don't turn off your firewall, antivirus, or anything else that you may want to boot. It will ask you to restart, and will give you to go back into that menu once you do. It might take a few tweaks to get perfect.

This is by far the biggest problem with Windows. Most companies write their applications to start with Windowsand some don't show up on the task bar at all. The reason they do this is applications always fight for memory to run and if they are always running then theirs a greater chance they will get the needed amount to run. So to resolve this Microsoft has added a nice little program called MSCONFIG to use it click start then run and then go to the Startup tab. Everything checked is what is running. Keep in mind that most AntiVirus programs will have a few going so you will want to have those.
**PLEASE NOTE ** That turning off application can result in certain features/programs not working at work someone disabled all and then couldn't figure out why their laptop couldn't switch to use the video projector. If that happens just go back to msconfig and turn it back on.
Hope that helped.

Click on the Start button
Select Run
Type in: msconfig
Click OK
In the window that opens, select the Startup tab
You will see a list of all the program that preload when you start Windows. This includes all the icons in the system tray (by the clock)
Uncheck anything you don't want to load into the tray. (Must people uncheck everything)
If something does not run right after that, you can back and recheck that item. (The File name and directory location usually will let you guess which one you want)

Click the Start button, click Programs, click Startup, and delete all that crap in there. Then reboot your computer.
Warning: using msconfig can cause major system problems, so don't jsut start turning things off without knowing what you are doing.
