I think its a personal choice, especially depending upon how impressionable the child is. I teach elementary age kids, and some of them will take sorcery seriously and perhaps become interested in "dark arts" some of which may actually be connected to Satan. However, there have to be a lot of adults turning a blind-eye on the kid in the first place for that to happen.
I am both a devout christian and a great fan of the books. They are extremely well researched in world mythology and use great twists of linguistics. For all the Ultra-Christian-Fundamentalists, they might be interested to know JK Rowling also includes Biblical references in the books. The books are well written and teach valuable lessons about friendship, coping with loss, anger management, peer pressure, and even depression. I think as long as the child has a good support net of people who care about him and has a relative grip on reality, the books are not even close to being remotely detrimental.
Not with out reason have the books been a huge success in over 20 languages for the past 10 years...and I haven't experienced the Apocalypse from all the newly learned witches and wizards yet, have you?
Happy Reading :)

I think Harry Potter is A OK. I have set through many sermons saying how bad the books / movies are, and my biggest contention is the same people who say Harry is bad are glorify the lion the witch and the wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia Series) as being good Christian literature. I just wish they would make up there mind is all mention of witches and magic bad or not.

No, Harry Potter is not bad. I have read the books and seen the movies. There's nothing bad in them. It's all in what you believe. I go to church and believe in God, and I see nothing wrong with Harry Potter.

I think Harry Potter, in a religious sense, shows the struggle between good and evil. After all isn't that what most religions are based on.

Harry Potter is not bad. There are just some people who imagine the devil behind every book cover, under every CD case, and in every movie.

I am glad I am not one of them.
