It's 'a god' or 'an omnipotent god', not 'god'. The latter is the misuse of a common noun as a proper noun.
Anyway, I'm glad that you asked, because I am probably the only person that knows exactly what the answer is and is willing to tell you. There are some ethically-neutral motives, such as companionship and excitement, but the largest motive is wrongful intent. Wrongful intent is the psychological desire to feel the crude blind sensation that disrupts fine clear fundamental truths in one's mind. Fine clear truth is divisible into the multiplicative factors of subtlety and definition. The truth is that 'the universe' is 'everything', which is an a-priori abstract logical concept, as are the natural laws. A-priori natural laws are both subtle and defined, such that theists with wrongful intent disrupt them in their mind. Abstract concepts have the property of fine subtlety, and definitive laws have the property of fine definition, thus a-priori logical laws are both subtle and defined. The opposite of subtlety is forcefulness, and the opposite of definition is seepingness. The superfical causal creationism and universal beginning-and-end belief possesses the property of crude forcefulness (this is also true of the big bang belief), and an omnipresent god that is not defined by scientific laws or composed of matter is characterized by the property of crude seepingness. Thus, in the mind of the wrongful theist, fine clarity is disrupted with crude blindness. So maliciously truth-disrupting are the wrongful theists that they claim that their falsehood is self-evident by observation. To learn the truthful cosmology, go to:

Notice that the user lady_bugs_2000 has libellously stated, in the convincing format of a question based upon a false assumption, that the truthful belief of atheists is based upon subjective feeling. That libellous behavior is caused by the wrongful seeping intent of disrupting the defined truth that conscious decisions are objective.
The desire to disrupt fundamental truths is an innate psychological desire, meaning that it is caused by the genes. The theists know that their wrongful desire is caused by the genes, which is why they reproduce so much, but they also believe that their belief is caused by free will. That behavior of acting on a truth despite believing a lie that contradicts it is called 'doublethink'.
The genes, in turn, result from evolutionary psychology in particular environments. The wrongful intent that causes theism is caused by ancestors that imposed symbolic burdens of labor onto themselves and eachother, and especially pre-adults (which were done in the name of parents and clan patriarchs; even today, the god is often called 'the heavenly FATHER'), which served to weed out the less fit individuals. Today, pre-adults perform the symbolic burden rituals of homework and schoolwork for that reason, and it is the theists that are the most fanatical supporters of the ageist burden rituals.

Not everyone. However, I think that God is real because I believe that there is some organizing and guiding force to the cosmos. If the universe were in a state of unchecked chaos, everything would be crashing into itself and nothing would rest long enough for life to begin. I believe in Jesus because I believe that humans have instincts, and my instincts have made me aware of the the presence of the Holy Spirit. Does that help you? God is all about free will. Search YOUR soul if you are curious.

Because no matter how far science advances and how much it can explain, there are still things in our universe that entirely defy logic and science. For example, most scientists now believe that the evolution of the world we now inhabit was instigated by the Big Bang. However, they still can't tell us specifically and unequivocally what the genesis of the Big bang was. It had to come from something, but no one knows what. These mysteries are where most cultures insert some type of theology, to try and explain the unexplainable.

There are evidences pointing to the existence of God. The harmony in the universe is one proof that no scientist can so far explain. The shroud of Turin is another. The miracles of our Blessed Virgin Mary is another evidence of His existence.
Nobody can force anyone to believe in God. It is a personal choice.

Most people are raised into some religious background. In the religion frame of mind, the bible in whatever form is believed to be the true word of god. I personally believe in god, just don't practice my catholic religion any more.

We don't ... it's just that the believers are so nervous that they are wrong, they never shut-up about gods supposed existence.
