I live in York County and had two guinea pigs. Last year one got mildly sick ( crusted nose, weezy breathing) so we took her to the Emergency Vet Clinic across from Spring Garden in the middle of the night. They looked her over, and decided she needed an antibiotic shot. Prior to the shot she was still walking around, but a half hour after the shot she went into convulsions and died. When we called the clinic to "tell" (actually call them every foul word that came to mind) them what happened, they said they had little experiance with guinea pigs( which they had NOT told us before). The other guinea pig was kept in the same cage and never got sick.(we still have her) The piggies were not old and usually healthy. Did the vets kill my piggie?

Sounds like it , probably gave too high a dose of antibiotic or there was nothing the vet could do that could have helped anyway I do not really know just guessing, you probably could not prove it if you do think that the vet did something wrong. Just thought I would tell you this a little story. I paid a vet to put my dog to sleep and he sold him to somebody and my dog showed up at my house 3 weeks later .It is a long story to tell so I will leave you with this I don't trust a lot of vets but I know there are some that are very good at what they do

It sounds like she may have had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic treatment the vet gave her or the dosage was wrong. However, from the symptoms you described, that's how it's handled.
I would say the person who gave the dosage didn't know how much they should have been giving her, or that she was too sick to be treated in time. It usually takes one full week of small antibiotic doses to treat things of that nature.
In any case, I'm very sorry to hear about your piggy. I would definitely go elsewhere if they were not courteous enough to tell you that they didn't have experience with guinea's.

Labored breathing, crackling sound from the lungs, eyes that are almost sealed shut, discharge from the eyes and/or the nose, sneezing, coughing, and wheezing can all be symptomatic of an upper respiratory infection (URI). A vet will prescribe a safe antibiotic to treat these bacterial infections (cavies do not get cold viruses). See a vet immediately if you see any of these signs. Untreated URIs are almost always fatal. Occasionally allergies can produce the same signs - but because URIs are so deadly and fast moving, it is imperative that the vet rules out a URI before considering the possibility of an allergy.

well, it would have been nice if they had told you upfront that they didn't have a lot of experience. I doubt that they did it on purpose the did what they felt was the best for the animal. could be that the dose was too high or your guinea pig was too far gone and would have died anyway. there really at this point is no way to really know without an autopsy.

It is hard to say if what they did killed it or if it was sicker than you thought when you took it in. It must have been pretty sick or you would have waited until the next day to take it to the vet. Still, they should have told you that they had little experience treating guinea pigs.

Sorry to here of your piggie. Any antibiotic that ends in 'cillin is deadly to piggies. It sounds like they gave it to much penicillin. Sorry to say the piggie had a respiratory infection and would have been dead in about 4 days anyway. By the time the crust appears its to late. Here is a couple of webs that will help you keep your piggie healthy.

GP's can get respiratory infections that can be fatal.
It could have simply been that your GP's infection was discovered too late.
Whether the vet new about GP's or not...well, regardless of having that knowledge or not, they can call someone who does know about them, as well as look in their references for a GP dosage of antibiotic.
So I think little GP was just too sick to begin with.
FYI: Crusted nose and wheezy breathing in a GP is NOT just mildly sick.

I dont think so , Guinea pigs do get respitory disease and they go down fast. they rarely linger one for days. and the stress of the move can put them over the edge
