I thought my closets were dry too but the stale odor problem was actually dampness. There is a product called "Damp Rid" that you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot and even some grocery stores. You leave a container of this in your closet and every now and then empty out the water and add refill product. Works wonders! In addition to this a piece of cedar will help with keeping it smelling fresh. But do the damp rid because no amount of febreze will solve the underlying problem.

I would go to the store and get some ceder chips. The stores sell them where you get your hangers and clothespins. Hang it in your closet, it will give it a breath of freshness and protect from moths at the same time! It will also absorb damp odor. A 2-fer.
The alcohol in the perfume evaporates so that's why the odor doesn't stay long.

Take everything out of the closet and either dry clean, it launder it, or give it away. If there's carpet on the floor, vacuum and shampoo it or take it out and put down lamanent (sp) hardwood, and paint the walls. Make sure you don't have any damp towels in a laundry basket in there. Guess your shoes could be a little offensive, too, but I don't know what to say about them. Good luck.

If it smells damp and rancid, then it likely is damp. try getting genuinely a variety of plastic packing containers that include dehumidifying crystals. they're commonly contained in the cleansing aisle of a food market or WalMart, and they are about the dimensions of a cottage cheese field. i'd also get the cedar chips or shavings for a sparkling fragrance this is no longer an overwhelming body spray. good success fixing this problem.

Bleach and original pine sol. Put them both into a pail of water and mop the floor or the closet with it. Let it air dry and you will enjoy the smell of clean.
