I believe when you look at skill, awe provoking, great character, and something to watch with comparison to talent amongst them I would have to say Sweetness. Unfortunately I wasn't around to see him or Brown play, but Payton is just something that utters respect to go with the numbers. I think it was his aura that really helped push him over the edge in a lot of very comparible stats except size.

While there are a multitude of past RBs who will be considered the epitome of that position, an all-purpose RB is someone who possesses the ability to pretty much control the tempo of the game in any aspect. Up until recently, Marshall Faulk could actually be called the best all-purpose (he surpassed Walter Payton in TOTAL SCRIMMAGE YARDS ... which is what ALL-PURPOSE relates to). However, LaDainian Tomlinson should take that mantle easily. The first ever RB to reach 1000 yards AND 100 receptions in the same season, last year he collected TDs by running, catching, AND throwing the pigskin.
When you think of RBs, you consider those that have racked up serious amounts of yards by rushing only. All-purpose scrimmage yardage is a different story, since many RBs are not used as utility WRs or secondary QBs.

First off let me take the time to point out that Reggie Bush won't be the best. Secondly, Barry Sanders (You are not asking for the best Super Bowl winning RB). I will explain in a quick breath why I pick Sanders over Brown, Brown played as a big bruising back in a time when Linemen and Linebackers were slower and Brown was very capable. Sanders played in a time where speed Linebackers were becoming more valuable than gold, and with a small frame that possessed little weight, was still capable of dominating on a Sunday to Sunday basis.

As of right now the best all-purpose is Marshall Faulk b/c he's the only back to ever run for 1000 yds and catch for 1000 yds in the same season. As far as who will be the best, the answer is Ladanian Tomlinson. He's the only back to ever run for 1000 yds and catch 100 passes in the same year. LT may end up being one of the best RBs of all time.

Barry Sanders. He could run and catch. Just saw a special on him on ESPN. If he would have retired later all rushing records would be owned by him. And he did this with no blocking FB, no QB and a very medicore Offensive Line.

All purpose meaning running, receiving, and special teams? I would have to say either Marcus Allen or Marshall Faulk.

Marshall Faulk was the best all-purpose back, and he probably always will be... but if Ladanian Tomlinson stays injury free in the latter part of his career he'll eclipse him !!!
