why should we know anything about our government and politics?
says a lot when we can't even learn a paragraph.

Because it is a "mission statement" for the United States. It tells us what we should strive for every time we vote, write a letter to a government official, protest what we believe to be something wrong, participate on a jury, enlist to serve in the Armed Forces, hope and plan the best for our children, work for the betterment of the poor and defenseless, etc etc etc.
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America"
Knowing the preamble means knowing who we are and what we want of our country and ourselves.

as an English teacher once said to me about defining sentences,it is information that may one day be useful to you and is a requirement to graduate.
same with the preamble.it may be useful to you one day and it is required that you learn it so you can pass that class.
