Do I chill the Diet Coke before dropping the Mentos to create that purported 'fountain'?

I think there will always be a fountain regardless of whether you chill the coke or not, the only difference will be how tall your fountain is. My gut feeling is that heated diet coke should work better (rate of chemical reactions slow down as temperature decreases).
Why don't you try both, chilled and unchilled diet coke? It will be a good addition to your experiment to report.

It is best to have the soda cold before you drop the Mentos in. Actually, from personal experience, white sodas work beter. Also, any type of mint, etc. will work. Tic tacs, mentos, altoids, ice breakers, are all great. I've tried it using Siera mist and mentos and tic tacs. I've also tried it using diet pepsi and mentos and tic tacs. The first one worked better.

You don't need to, but try it different ways to get the highest arch. Have you seen the video of two performance artists shooting off about 400 2 liters of the stuff to music? I think you can find it on YouTube.com.

carbonic acid works pretty much the same in room temperature or chilled. There is a difference, but it is very very slight.

I dont thinks it matters, its the carbon in the drink that makes it explode. Warning it makes a terrible mess!! Have FUN!

We did it on the fourth....just plain old room temperature....we found that it worked on ANY diet soda, btw....
