Males generally only get aggressive in the spring (mating season) stay way out of their way at that time. Never get between a doe and her baby, that's sure to end in disaster. Otherwise, deer are very timid animals and are more afraid of you than you to them.! Also, try not to carry any snacks that might attract them, you can look on the internet for these. If you still don't feel comfortable, go ahead and take a club, but you probably won't need to use it.

During the fall rutting season (mating season) male deer can become very aggressive and can and will attack any human they percieve as a threat to thier does. Also female deer are aggressive in spring when they drop their fawns. I would carry something with you because it would help in case one did charge you and it is better to be safe than sorry. Sad enough to say this wouldnt be a problem if wolves hadnt been extirpated from 80% of thier former range in the united states, otherwise they would keep the natural balance in the area and there wouldnt be so many deer...This is becoming a big problem here in Southern Ontario Canada where wolves have also been driven out. There have been more and more problems with deer aggressively staking out new territories and becoming a nuisance because of eating crops and gardens and attacking people during the rut. All because thier natural predators have been lost in those areas.

Mating season is the FALL not the spring, and yes, the males can get aggressive. Most of the time deer are real shy and will run away if they think you noticed them.

Deer are not usually agressive. In fact, they usually run away, if one gets close enough (except when they're in the middle of the road in front of your fast car). However, during mating season, they may be bolder and challenge people.

Deer can attack people. They are probably looking for food, and if they find any they will be back for more. A club is a good idea.

the attacks are probably female dear...and there are probably fawns lying close by...they are only "attacking" to protect the young...they won't harm you unless they feel they're in danger...
