Macintosh, released in 1984, was the first commercially successful product to use a GUI. A desktop metaphor was used, in which files looked like pieces of paper

Xerox corporation, the famous copier company, first developed the concept of a GUI, including a mouse, in the 70s.
They had a computer ready to go, but basically a copier company just wasn't ready to get into the computer business.
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs toured the Xerox facility, and came away a changed man. He could see where Apple had to go.
In 1984, Apple introduced the Macintosh, and you saw why '1984 won't be like...1984'.
Bill Gates was very jealous of this new computing paradigm, and basically stole it again as he developed Windows.
If you want to see a great movie about all this piracy, I highly recommend the movie 'Pirates of Silicon Valley', which captures much of the passion of those past times!
Great question, BTW!

The first practial working GUI (graphical user interface) is credited to being created by Xerox (yes the copier company). But they really didn't want anything to do with it.
Apple then stole the concept and design of a GUI from Xerox, which Microsoft then stole from Apple.

It was developed by Xerox at PARC- Palo Alto Research Center. And, as you see, the company got nothing out of it.

The Apple Lisa I think. Shorty after the Apple II came out? The Lisa didn't sell well due to its high cost (around $20,000).
