There is only one way to effectively do this. You must constantly interview at other jobs, looking for a 10% pay increase. Once you have an offer, tell your boss about it. He either meets it or you make the shift to the new job. Do this every 6 months to a year or so.

The best way to approach your boss is when he / she is in a good mood. NEVER do this in front of a group or other co-workers. Be firm and serious. Let your boss know what you have done to better the company and how your lesser salary may not be adequate compared to the salaries of other competitive positions. However, do not whine or appear to be sour on the subject. Just be sure to let them know your discontent at the current salary. Whenever you bring up money you must be aware that the employer may detect your unhappiness as a symbol of no longer being loyal to the company and may just tell you to pack your things and move on. Though this usually does not happen, it may. Just be aware that it can happen (and has happened in the past). Be sure to do your research before approaching your boss. Be sure to point out all the positives that you bring to your job (and hence the company). You can never predict how they will take your request. But you won't know unless you ask. Depending on the company (and size), you may be able to request for a raise once or even twice a year. However, I would never suggest being too pushy. If the company has shown growth and profits, then your chances may be good. However, if the company is doing bad and is about to fold, then it surely wouldn't be in your best interest to even bring up a raise at that time.

if you work at an office, make a report, how much of your paycheck went to gas, and other costly expenses a year ago, before they went up, and then compare it with graphs and other reports indicating how much more its gone up, and how this is affecting your ability to afford general expenses that you were affording better before.

if you work for a smaller company, or a locally owned company, its alot more difficult. generally they give you raises periodically,

if you feel you really need a raise, put together something like this:

(find a quiet place where other co-workers aren't going to hear you talk about this, as it is a private matter, and some would not see it as fair if your boss was giving a raise to you, and not others)
"i'm sorry to take up your time, but with the cost of gas, and everything else thats been going up, its become very hard for me to afford things. i enjoy working for your company, and appreciate the pay i'm already receiving, all i'm wondering is if you can give some thought to helping me out a little more with the amount i receive per hour. is everyone experiencing this problem? i really am trying to make ends meet with the way things are now, but i want to know what you think?" you want to remain as polite, and as gratefull as possible. those are the 2 key elements to asking this type of a question.

You need to do some research on what people are being paid while doing a job like yours. Then ask for a raise.

that's healthier to ask in individual. clarify why you're searching for a enhance, be certain. conceal factors the position you've kept the employer money by using imposing the affordable pleasant degree. i.e. replacing distributors who did not have the companys best interest, mutually with providing negotiated prices and price reductions for one which does.
