As you point out, we are not a country that follows one vote per person in the handling of all governmental affairs. That would be impossible. So what we do is select representatives that will handle affairs in a general fashion. As a democracy, we still hold the right to change our support for any represenative. The fact that some fall from grace is a sign that the system does work. It is the best form of government that has developed in the history of humanity thus far, even with the evident flaws and problems.

Democracy is a wide-reaching term referring to a system of government in which regular citizens play a significant part in running the government.

The United States is a republic. A republic is a representative democracy, which means that the people vote for others to represent them and fulfill the day to day demands of running the country.

We tout the idea of democracy, which we fully practice. The term isn't misleading. We never intended to have a direct democracy. That would be completely unfeasible, and a bad idea considering how capricious peoples' opinions are. We need statesmen to stay the course, and think about our long term interests.
