I personally am a METCO student and go to suburban school. For those people who think that there are still "white" bathrooms (chainsawmom) and racist assholes like chancejty98. Or people like panacea. You are wrong because the mixing of cultures is a beautiful thing and it is a better education. I love going to my school and yes it is a long bus ride but its worth the education so one day I can be the owner of an orgaization that stops racist assholes like chancejty98 form being born. I have learned and experienced things I would have never if I went to a Boston Public School. I have been to two Bar Mitzvahs and experienced other religions and a Pakistan New Years party. Thanks for the people who believe in people like me who are trying to get a better education so they don't end up ignorant and uneducated.
One other little thing to add: Two of my best friends are from my SUBURBAN school.
Amo- thats wrong and racist to say that

Wow that's nice that your parents don't have to pay the taxes and foot the bill. These other parents are paying larger property taxes to keep their kids away from the inner city schools, and then they bus them in. Reason I moved out of New York!
*I don't care if anybody thinks this is racist, it could be inner city white kids also, why should I be paying $5400.00 a year in property taxes to pay for someone elses ride. When I pay that to remove my child from that environment, I don't expect it to follow.

I grew up in Oklahoma City during the 60's and 70's. They had a plan to improve the quality of education by bussing kids from one side of town to the other. It took the kids out of their neighborhoods and sent them across town to attend another school. Instead of improving the education, it leveled it so that no one got a good education. It ended in riots, protests and even one death. Inner city kids need to stay in the city. What needs to happen is suburban school teachers need to move to the inner city schools.

I think suburban schools might be better for them just because people in the suburbs have more money and are able to provide better schools. On the other hand I believe children benefit from being close to home and their own neighborhoods.

I think it is a great opportunity for lower income families to give their children a better education, which will bring them more options in life (housing, jobs, etc.). Many suburban schools welcome and assist financially students who come from poor urban areas.
Many students may not feel like they fit in though, and schools should be sentitive to the need to include all students and promote respect of differences.

i think if you can get further going to a better school, go for what you know. If you won't get into the college of your dreams going to some dung heap of a school, then I would hit up the better school. I went to stratford, and given the choice to either go there or N. Charleston High, I would drive for hours to get to Stratford vs. walking across the street to N.Chas High. But I am out of school, so .....blah blah blah...

I think its a long bus ride.
I don't think a little kid needs a long day at school and a long bus ride before and after. And when a kid goes to school far from where his parents live or work it makes everything harder (kid gets sick at school, parent teacher conferences, sports and other extra-curricular events)

It's wrong and causes huge problems.
All you need to know to figure this out is to just ask the kids if they want to go. The answer is always no.
