Because as a whole the human race is bound to disagreeing, and so many people believe that violence/disdain/anger/hatred/disregard are a solution instead of the problem. The simple fact is that without being willing to put differences aside, and love people for who they are, even the truly evil (and yes, I am saying you have to love the truly evil, typically this comes about for reasons of mental illness or because of behavioral influences that affected them at an age which were beyond their control -- either way, most serial killers and murderers were FORGED by society; usually by the people who 'claimed' they 'loved' them) then we are condemned to a life filled with hatred and menace.

There's a saying in the customer service industry: do something well for a customer and they will tell one other person. Do something badly, and they'll tell ten.

Mean people (or, at least their actions) are more memorable. I think that's a vote for how we assume that we'll be treated nicely, and not meanly, by the humans we meet. And that, in turn, points to there being more nice people than mean ones.

Because there is evil; the enemy will always be present. People become mean for power, wealth, expansion, etc. They steal because they are hungry or greedy. They lie and cheat to cover their wickedness. They kill for pleasure and out of sickness. It is often said that the nature of man is war - countries and people will constantly combat one another for territory, natural resources, control. political ideals, etc. The evil has always been present and will be until the end of time.
