I'm trying to get a High Speed Internet provider on my computer, but I am not so sure which is better; DSL or Cable. And I also don't know what provider I should go with. Please help me out.

Well I've had both and even though cable is faster sometimes it's not faster than DSL all the time. See, the problem is this, Cable has a certain bandwidth called wide band, but it is only real wide when there are not a lot of cable subscribers online at the same time. In other words when there is a lot of traffic the bandwidth shrinks and slows down as more and more people get online.
DSL or ADSL on the other hand is not as fast as BroadBand Cable but it is more consistent in it's speed and doesn't slow down as much as Cable does when a lot of people get online during peak hours of Internet Activity. And DSL is much more reliable than Cable, cable goes down a lot, as a matter of fact mine used to be down more than it was up, and that's why I switched to Earthlink DSL and it has served me faithfully for well over a year now. I highly recommend it, the download speeds are very consistent and videos I watch are very clear and distinct.

Cable is usually faster, however; the way cable works is your sharing the line with other people so it would depend where your located. For example I just moved from a house that was a block from Comcast and I was getting around 4.5megabits per second and now I move and the nearest one is about a mile and a half away and now I am getting around 2.5megabits per second on a average because those ahead of me are using up some of the bandwidth. On DSL your guanteed a speed but in order to guarntee that they usually cap the line on speed. So the difference will really depend on where you live and the services being offered. They advertise up to 6megbits per second but it's rare I see that. DSL most plans are like 256kilobytes or 512 and they go up from there, but so does the price.

My suggestion is to research with local users. Sometimes DSL is better in than cable, sometimes cable is better.

In general, cable will be slower during "peak times" because everyone is on the same bandwidth as off-peak times. DSL may be slower overall, and more steady. DSL it will depend on how far away from the hardware the company has, cable can be any distance.

Ask neighbors, or friends that live close and have either form what they think. Customer service is another thing to ask about besides the speed.

DSL! you share line with others when you have cable which slows down the speed. My hubby installs DSL for a living for a major telephone company. Cable is horrible, I have it now because dsl is not available where I live. my dsl was perfect and I never had a problem, my cable is crap and much slower!

Looks like kernels of truth in prior answers but somewhat incomplete. In most areas, cablemodem is faster for download. Your speed with a cablemodem can depend on how many people in your area also have cablemodem since the same line provides internet to a number of people. Last I heard, DSL does not guarantee any spped (nor does cable). The DSL, while not affected by other people in your area is affected by how close you are to the nearest switching station. Further away equals less speed for same price. Granted my area of experience is cablemodem both as longtime user and prior tech support for cablemodem service.

So if you have read all the replies you would see there is 1 thing in common - it all depends on your area. The quality of the lines ran in your area, the bandwidth the service providers offer in your area, the concentration of users in your area, the quality of the providers network engineers in your area.....The list could go on and on.

Best thing to do, if neither providers require a contract (in your area), is to have both installed and see for yourself.

If you dont have the means to test out both, get outside and talk to some neighbors or friends. Im sure you will hear their horror stories about both of em.

Cable is usually faster. You should ask the provider what the speeds are.

DSL is fantastic... 768k is the minimum and lowest fee... yet you will get 3 mbps...... as a lot as 5 even i imagine, possibly even extra %. i recognize dsl. one hundred cases extra efficient than dial up. certain, cable is swifter, yet cable is too severe priced.
