Portland has the "Old Port" which is a wonderful place to spend the day walking to different shops and then at night bar hopping. There is Old Orchard Beach which has everything (bars, small amusement parks, restaurants etc.) People drive hours to spend the weekend there. Up north there is hiking, camping and whitewater rafting. We have a beautiful coast full of beaches. Maine is an outdoor kind of place but the shopping and restaurants along the coast are great to.
In the winter, we have skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling. We still spend a lot of time outdoors.

The town of Freeport is the home of L.L. Bean, but it's got a number of outlet shops which make for good shopping.

There are a number of small towns between Portland and Belfast which are interesting. Some have special events and festivals that are worth going to; for example, Rockland has a Blues Festival in mid-July usually, and a Lobster festival in early-August which are both pretty good events.

Visit Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. I also like Boothbay Harbor and Freeport. There's so many things to do outdoors that I can't name them all. They even have a desert. If you can, take a whale watch out of any of the harbors, or a seal watch, or a puffin watch. If you're adventurous, you can take a ride on a schooner.
