In brief, sponsorship means that the sponsored undertake to meet the cost of stay, maintenance etc of the visitor to USA on the kind of Visa visitor has applied and being granted, for the entire period of the stay.

To substantiate this undertaking, the sponsored from USA must have enough income / resources and can prove so by way of his/her tax returns / assessment - this is just one example. The signed copies of income documents for the previous 2-3 years are required alongwith with attested / signed undertaking to the effect. Besides, Officer granting Visa may also impose such other condition(s) as he deems fit for the purpose.

The website of the US embassy for the relevant country has normal details of requirements for compliance, as on any particular point of time. It is advisable to comply such requirements in letter and spirits, however, such compliance never guarantee grant of Visa on the face of it.
