You told me I needed to dig a big, 2-3 foot hole to put a clothesline pole in, except my yard has the toughest dirt, No way can I do it with a shovel. Is there such a thing as a hole digger I can rent for say 4 hours at the rental hardware store? I suppose I could call them, but they are closed right now and it is past 8 pm in Illinois.

Drill it first. Rent a roto-hammer with a long drill bit and then use your hand operator post hole digger. I'm guessing DG or red clay. Don't forget to have a bolt drilled thru the pole midway in the hole so it doesn't spin later. In tough dirt like you described the hole doesn't have to be that big. Just about 2 ft deep x 10 inches wide and make the hole a little oval before filling with concrete.

3 ft for a clothesline? You must sport some heavy denim.

You should be able to manage with a post-hole digger (looks like a 2-handed shovel), but if the grounds too hard you can rent an auger - think big drill.

You can buy a post hole digger for about $20 or so at any good building supply store or probably rent one for a day for $5. I wouldn't advise a power auger unless you have a couple of gorillas to operate it for you, they're tough. If your dirt is that tough a 2ft deep by 10 or 12 inch across hole with a sack of redi-mix should do great...

United rentals rents something called an auger, its a gas powered drilling machine that can go up to about 4 feet deep or so usually you use 2 men to drill because its hard to hold but Ive used it alone and im 6'3 140 lbs, so an avg man can use it, and there are varying bit sizes

It is called a Post Hole Digger. I don't know about renting them but it would not hurt to ask.

Either a post hole digger or an electric augur (farmers can put an augur on as an attachment to a tractor's PTO - another option if you don't want to do it yourself)
