Either not understanding the thought that went behind the action that they are not grateful for, or they were already in a bad mood. or they are too stubborn to show appreciation to that certain person. especially if they are a teen you'll see this as they still think that their life is the big story of the world right now.

Being given everything you've ever wanted at your beck and call previously will breed arrogance and a lack of gratitude. Someone who is like this has never had to be greatful because they were never told it was uncustomary to go out of one's way to do things. It's a learned behavior.

generally, being given everything they ask for, and never having to take responsibility for anything or earning anything. Look around you, see all those teens, and the way their parents give them things, that's what is causing it.

Self-centredness.
Some people just cannot think beyond themselves at all and all the bad things that have ever happened to them. They dwell on the negative and forget or diminish the positive.

I would say a lack of awareness has been mine. When I lose something I then realize how much it meant. But if I pay attention I don't have to lose things to realize their value.

Because your great, great, great grandpappy was someones slave way back when. You probably don't even know the grandpappy's name, but you're pissed and ungrateful all the same.

they're young and they think they know everything,
somebody was rude to them, and they figure they'll just return the favor to everyone, instead of just the person who was rude..
maybe you were rude to them first...
or they need to be taught the meaning of respect!

What?!? Why would you need to point that out to anyone? How do you think you are helping in any way?
