We got some from a neighbor. They were growing under their Japanese maple tree. They let us have them for free and they didn't have to dig them up themselves. Since they are small we just planted them in pots and put them in a protected area where the bunnies can't eat them. They may take a while to grow but it's better than paying a hundred+ dollars for them. Just look around the neighborhood and ask if you can help each other out.

Try asking some of your neighbors for suckers or sprouts from their trees.

Arbor Day Foundation may have low cost trees, but not free.
