The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly referred to as simply "Wimbledon", is the oldest and arguably most prestigious event in the sport of tennis. Held every June and July in London, United Kingdom the tournament is the third Grand Slam event played each year, preceded by the Australian Open and the French Open, and followed by the U.S. Open. The tournament (which is the only Grand Slam event played on grass - although there are other tournaments played on the surface such as Queens and Halle) lasts for two weeks, subject to extensions for rain.
Separate tournaments are simultaneously held, all at the same venue, for Gentlemen's Singles, Ladies' Singles, Gentlemen's Doubles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Youth tournaments — Boys' Singles, Girls' Singles, Boys' Doubles and Girls' Doubles — are also held. Additionally, special invitational tournaments are held: the 35 and over Gentlemen's Doubles, 45 and over Gentlemen's Doubles, 35 and over Ladies' Doubles and wheelchair doubles.

Wimbledon is considered the greatest of the Slams because of it's respect for the history of tennis and the majesty of ceremony.
For example. Traditionally, (going back to early 20th century), players dressed only in white. Today at Wimbledon...the tradition still holds. If you watch the end of the Gentleman's or Ladie's Championships on Saturday or Sunday, you'll notice a "quiet" presentation of trophies. The ceremony also includes the respectful salute of the tournaments' ballboys and referees. Finally, in the spectator boxes, you will always see someone from royalty. Put all those things together and Wimbledon holds the most history and is considered the greatest of them all.

Without providing a long-winded answer.
It's because Wimbledon is the longest-running of the 4 slams, and is steeped in history.
Plus the grass court season is VERY short, so this is the MOST coveted title on that surface.
