No, Nintendogs if local wi-fi only. No internet. Nintendogs came out before Mario Kart, which was one of the first DS games to go online.

it's true it's only local wifi. You use go out > bark mode to start it on both DSes you are going to use. You can give the dog an item to hold to give to the other player. If you set it up with the other nintendogs owner so both dogs carry an item, you'll trade the 2 items. You can unlock breeds this way, but only 1 extra breed per game copy.
