ferrets are born with bad eye sight (might have seen him run into things) so smell and sound are there strongest sense's.

Little animals are interested in hearing new noises. So they tap alot because they like the sound. Of course sometimes when they THUMP on a cage it might mean that danger is nearby.

Cats also show this behavior. It triggers their hunting instincts. Dragging a sock or string gets them to pounce and rustling your hand under the covers really excites them.
All these behaviors help them to catch their food in the wild.
