Oh I am so sorry for your loss, Dear Megan you should go to the ER to be examed, that's the best thing you can do . I don't want to get graphic or scare you - but any discharge you have you should take with you. I was about 2 months when I had a miscarriage and they were able to tell from my discharge I was not cancerous..it could help.
So please go to the ER if you can, they would be able to give you a better exam and more detail of what will happen, talking about it also helps too and many female nurses and doctors are very understanding. As far as knowing when it passes you might not really be able to tell because of the bleeding that follows..
Your doctor will ask you to come back and you should do a follow up appointment because anything left inside can cause an infection *its true*. I hope this answers your Question and I hope you and your mate find peace at the end this.

You won't know when it's fully gone. You will begin to bleed and will have some pretty rough cramps ... they will feel very sharp and can be quite painful. Also, expect quite a bit of blood loss. You will typically bleed like you would for a typical period ... so, approximately 5-7 days. After your miscarriage, your ob/gyn doctor will want to see you to make sure that everything was discharged. If not, he or she will want to schedule a D&C. This surgical procedure will scrape out the lining of your uterus. I'm so sorry for your loss. This is going to be a really tough time for you. You will still have all of the hormones of pregnancy so beware of the sudden mood swings. If you ever get so down, call your doctor ASAP. And if you ever have any questions, call your local labor and delivery ... the nurses working there are usually happy to answer any questions.

Get to a doctor quick smart instead of being on your computer. If you are miscarrying, you will need to be checked to see if everything has been expelled. If anything is left behind, you will get a severe infection causing toxic shock. When I miscarried years ago, while still in hospital, they found that some did not come out. Grossly they called it, "retained body parts".
GO NOW, GET OFF THE COMPUTER!!!

You really need to see your ob/gyn. If traces are left in the uterus, you could develop an infection or have other problems that could affect your health and fertility.
I'm sorry about your loss.
