Increasing the level by 1 Bel, or 10 dB, increases the intensity by a factor of 10. The scale is logarithmic, so:
+20 dB = 100x
+30 dB = 1,000x
+40 dB = 10,000x
So ADDING 40 dB to your starting number MULTIPLIES the intensity level by 10,000. (By the way, 120 dB of sound can cause pain and permanent hearing loss.) Have fun!
