I think the hotels in Sydney are generally more expensive than other cities in Australia for the same standard. By that I mean don't compare the price of the Sydney Inter-Continental with the Holiday Inn in Brisbane, for example.
I think that, like New York, London, Paris etc, that Sydney is more expensive as price is based on demand. Sydney is the financial and business hub of Australia and also one of the premier tourist detinations, and so hotels price their rooms based on demand vs supply.
I agree that a good site to visit is wotif.com.au to check out the hotel choices

I think you are wondering so because Sydney is a famous downtown of Australia. Also they have an Opera house which is the feature of the country. In fact, there are cheap and expensive hotels mixing in everywhere around Australia. The rates are different in the city and not only in Sydney, but others as well. Which is about your wondering of the rates, you should try to check by yourself at www.excelloz.com (Their rates here are cheaper than normal anyways.)

Sydney hotels, are NOT the same some ar as low as $81/night and higher.
BEFORE you go to the hotel do a back round check on the hotel, like go on the net' and search hotels and find the one you want, next look at the costumer rating and see what other people say about the hotel, then you can find the price per night and see if you like that hotel. hope this info. helps w/ hotel club you can save up tp 60%!!

I went to Sydney a month in the past and that i might strongly recomend the Shrang- Ri l. a. inn. you ought to get a set on the best flooring. they have marvelous perspectives of the harbour and opera residing house on the best flooring. At 6:00 pm. on a daily basis, they serve little snacks and brevrages which contain those marvelous dumplings and a diffrent type of nutrition. It exits out on Gloucester st. and Cumberland st. Its actual interior the Rocks section (place with bridge and opera residing house.)

One of the members of our travel discussion group just recommended the Carrington Apartments in Sydney as a very well-located, reasonably-priced option: http://tinyurl.com/kluqo
Hope that helps!

The hotels in the city seem to be pretty expensive. Go to travelocity or expedia or orbitz.
