There were supposed to be giant superhighways with automatic cars in the sixties. There were supposed to be space stations and missions to Jupiter in 2001. What happened?

It looks like you've delved into science-fiction a bit too much. True, it does seem that many of the predictions from the past haven't been fulfilled. (It's the 21st Century. I was promised flying cars! Where are the flying cars?) However, futurologists of old have missed some of the advances that we do have, such as microwave ovens, personal computers, home theatres, and pills that wipe out ulcers.

Keep in mind that science-fiction writers tend to be, first and foremost, writers. The best source of future technology might be engineers and laboratory scientists who usually don't venture into writing for the masses.

Politics my friend. Special interest groups, the petroleum industry, lack of funding or shelving of ideas. I heard on the news the day of the Shuttle launch, that NASA's budget is less than 1% of the US Government Budget. There are many things that we have today that were brought about by the Shuttle Missions. The US Budget needs to be revised and more spent on R & D for alternate fuel sources that renew, such as Ethanol, and more funding for space missions. But you got polititians running the show, which is synonamous with "do nothings" but vote for pay raises.

There are super highways. I don't know about you but my car is an automatic. We have an international space station that the shuttle just linked up with and the trips to Jupiter have not yet taken place due to logistics problems.

I guess everything has just fell behind due to science. We are just now making the superhighways with automatic cars.

Because in the 70's people where astounded by the technological and scientific leaps that we where making, they thought that the future would be like that, they just dreamed too big, and why on Jupiter? i mean isn't most of it's mass gas? oh, well, that's besides the point.
