You don't HAVE to go to college, but your chances of getting hired for any police force are a lot higher if you have a college education. Another option would be to go into the military and gain experience as a military policeman.

Without college, you probably won't get hired as a police officer.

Dear Traffic School,

My father is acutally a retired policer officer and believe it or not, the rules are changing for what classifications you can have in order to become a police/patrol officer. Most states will require a 4-year college degree, but they will also consider any kind of Military Police training that equals 4 years of on-the-job training as opposed to a degree. There's also boot camp... But if you are going to college and if you are studying Criminology or Justice, this is the preferred degree of study as well as Anthropology and Health / Science (for deceased case involvements). Your best bet is to actually call the local department and they should have a designated person who can walk you through the process. Believe it or not, they are very active about hiring citizens for this role...

Hope this helps!!!

Regards,

Nope, they prefer some sort of training curiculum but if you're trying out for a sherriff or city cop job then there are no college requirements.

All state patrol officers go thru a "boot camp".

If you want to go to college first major in something that you are interested in instead of law enforcement in case you get the job and decide you don't like it.

P.S. If you become a cop please don't be a dick!
