Have around 22 tattoos myself, I think I am somewhat qualified to answer this question. In general, no, they do not hurt. A little uncomfortable at first, then you kinda numb up. But, there are parts of the body that are more sensitive than others. Above the hips should not hurt at all since it's the size of a nickle, it'll be done before you know it.
The worse part of a tat for me is when its all done. It feels like a bad sunburn for a few hours.

It shouldn't hurt that bad? However? Since pain is a relative thing you need to take it on advisement that eating food an hour before you get a tattoo and no drugs or alcohol will make your tattoo experience much more pleasant. The outline of the tattoo goes down deeper than the "colored" part...so if you want a "tribal" style be aware that it is a bit more painful as the entire tattoo is darker and deeper. I would advise going into a clean establishment and talking to the artist that would be doing your tat. I would also advise looking at pictures and drawings beforehand because to be honest? It is a quick decision to go in and get it done...but it also is a fairly expensive one. And if you don't like the tattoo? Getting it removed or changed is also more expense on your part. Good luck!
By the way? I have two. One on my ankle and one on my hip.

None of mine hurt, i have 3, but none are on my hips like that..and everyone has a different tolerance for pain. As far as how long it takes...it depends...the smallest one i have took about 20 min including preparing the skin and everything...and its still larger than the size of a nickel...so maybe about 30 minutes. And be sure its really what you want too, it'll hurt more and cost more to remove them.

it depends on where u get the tattoo as to how bad it hurts and the size as to how long it takes generally the more flesh u have in an area the less painful and the bigger and more complex it is the longer it will take u can get a small tattoo in like 30 mins not counting prep some large ones take days weeks or months

Tattoos hurt more depending on where they are. I have two. A small one on my left shoulder blade and a medium sized one on my left ankle. It stings a little, but it isn't bad. What hurts is when they are directly over a bone. The one on my ankle took forty-five minutes and hurt like hell. The one on my shoulder blade took about ten minutes and after the initial outlining of the tattoo it didn't hurt. If you get yours on the fleshy part of your hip it shouldn't be too bad and with the size, I don't think it'll take very long. Good luck!

Tattoos don't hurt as much as being uncool does. It used to be that only sociopaths and those who couldn't think far ahead in life got tattoos. Now it's the norm. Almost everyone under a certain age demographic has one, and of course that age is going to just keep rising as the young hipsters age...'cause those tatt's aint coming off.
They used to use a question about tattoos on mental health exams, to find out of a patient had a certain type of personality disorder. Now, the majority have tatttoos. Does that mean the mainstream has this personality disorder? Could it be?

If you want a tattoo right above your hip then i don't see why it would hurt only if its on or close to the bone, and depending on ur body type. it shouldn't take all that long its small i'd say no more than a half hour.

It just feels like someone is scratching your skin. Hurts a bit. Depends on the area too. The more sensitive the area-the more it hurts, back of the knee-pretty painful.

Small ones don't take long. But it will feel like someone is carving into your flesh with a box cutter. It sucks. I have three tats. And the one on my tummy hurt like heck.

It all depends on were you get them. I have 2 one located on my ankle and the other is on my lower back. the prices vary by artists and were you put your tats. My lower back cost 200 and my ankle cost 60. the reason my ankle cost more is cause it is a custom piece.
