A few weeks ago I came back to my car following a heavy rain and noticed that the roof of my Explorer was soaked and that water was dripping from just above my driver's side windshield visor. This had never happened before, and I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can figure out where the leak is coming from...it's not obvious like a big hole is in the roof, but I do have a sunroof. There are no visible leaks or problems with the sunroof and everything was closed at the time? Has anyone had this happened or does anyone know how a repair shop would possibly try to solve this problem? (ie: I know when you have a leak in a tire it can be submerged under water, but this can't be done for my entire car...or can it? lol....) Thanks for any help with my predicament.

take your garden hose and run it over the windshield. have someone sit inside and watch for water. (i used to work in a body shop) we used to do this after new windshields were installed.

Don't listen to that. Fords are as good as anything else...although that isn't saying much nowadays. Quality is a lost art to everyone.

Anyway, it sounds like it is the sunroof seal leaking. Those are hard to find. Look around the sunroof; is there one side or corner that looks like it had more water on it than the rest? That's probably the general part of the sunroof it's coming from. Or, if you're feeling courageous, have a friend pour water over the roof and see if you can see where it's coming from.

In any case, the fix would probably just be some new weather stripping. You could get it just on the sunroof (what I'd recommend) or around every seal in your vehicle.

One of the drains for the sunroof might be disconnected or clogged, or you might have a leak at the front windshield seal. You must water test it by putting a hose on one section at a time and waiting to see if the water comes in. The best way to tell is by removing or pulling the headliner down a little so you can see a) the sunroof drains and the sheet metal by the front windshield. If this is beyond your scope you might want to contact your Ford dealer they will definitely be able to diag your problem.

In a car that age, you'd have to consider shrinkage as a possible cause of the leaks. You could have the sunroof or the windshield reinstalled (or patched, if you're not planning to keep the car much longer).

Good luck!

With a sunroof, there should be drain tubes to drain the water out of the channel in the roof. If these tubes are clogged or leak, it can allow the flooding that you experienced.

Try blowing out the tubes with compressed air, or have the shop check the drains!

you can try going through a car wash or use the garden hose and run it on the top of the truck. Get in when you do this and look for the leak. It might have a hairline crack on top of where the windshield connects to the roof or something.

Sometimes the drain lines for the sunroof can be blocked either by debris or insects ect. Try cleaning them. Its usually the problem in older vehicles with sunroofs.
