They are both built-up areas with mega-hotels. Kaanapali, however, is close to the old fishing village of Lahaina, which features great beach-front restaurants with "catch of the day" and great views. Plus all along this coast you have unprecedented views of neighboring islands of Lanai, Molokai, and the tiny Molokini. For those reasons, I'd give the edge to Kaanapali.

Kaanapali is better. You have Lahaina right down the street. Wailea can be a little stuffy with all the money down there.

Wailea for romance, fine dining, high end hotels. Kaanapali for more of a city/cancun feel.

We loved Ka'anapali but everywhere on Maui is beautiful. Make sure to take the road to Hana. Both the journey and the destination make this a worthwhile day trip. Bring me home a dozen pineapples, PLEASE. Ever since I ate pineapples on Maui, the ones at the grocery store just don't do it for me. Have fun. Aloha!
