In a recent world cup soccer match, the goalkeeper was booked for holding onto the ball for 2 seconds too long even though it was in open play, his team were winning 1-0 at that point. his team eventually lost 2-1, but in that game, in the final minute of the game, one of the winning teams midfeild players, took the ball into the oppositions corner and whilst physically preventing a player from taking the ball, he also held the ball up, for about 40 seconds obviously wasting time. should this player not also have been booked for time wasting?

No, he should not have been booked, that is perfectly legal. The first situation you describe is not legal. Therefore, the referee made the correct choices.

I have a problem with this time wasting stuff.
If someone wastes time, just tack it onto the stoppage time added at the end of each half.
Doh! What's with all these yellow cards?

Also, there's far more time wasted by players other than the goalkeeper, especially if the team in possession is leading.

You can almost see the referees' knees jerk at times.
I wonder how many refs at this competion now wished they'd never gone.

Rule number 1: FIFA is never wrong....

I doubt the second case is time wasting in the sense where it is a bookable offence(though of course his aim was to waste time).Once the ball is in active play a player can hold on to it as long as he is able. That is basically the same thing that happens when a team passes the ball among themselves in their own half just to pass away the time.

Have you done the washing up yet? How about the beds? There's always something to be done. Dusting can only be left for so long.

When a player is injured (time wasting) - why don't they just do what they do in Rugby stop the clock.
